Fed: Stott Despoja begins task of winning back the disaffected
The new Australian Democrats' leader, NATASHA STOTT DESPOJA, today begins her campaign
to win back the supporters disaffected by her party's deal with the government that saw
the GST passed.
Fresh from her win in the Democrats' leadership ballot, Senator STOTT DESPOJA says
she heads a re-energised party that'll pull together for the coming federal election.
She says there's a perception among members that Democrat politicians are out of touch
with the grassroots.
But she says she'll work hard to be accessible and accountable.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says he'll reserve judgment on Senator STOTT
DESPOJA until he's seen how she performs on key issues.
And Mr HOWARD says history will record that former Democrats leader MEG LEES did the
right thing by Australia in backing tax reform.
Australian Greens senator BOB BROWN says he'll explore preference swapping with the
new-look Democrats.
