QLD: Cabinet endorses drug strategy
The Queensland cabinet has finalised its drugs strategy, which proposes trials of
Naltrexone and Buprenorphine for Queensland's 9,000 heroin users.
The strategy also supports heroin trials in Victoria and the ACT and Premier PETER BEATTIE
will take it to the premiers' conference in Canberra on Friday.
Mr BEATTIE says he hopes the Queensland trials can be run with the southern states to
determine the best approach to the heroin problem, which killed more than 600 Australians each
year.
But he says the extent of Queensland's heroin trials hinges on commonwealth funding
support.
Mr BEATTIE says the federal government needs to allocate more than the proposed $17.5
million over three years for a sufficient national drugs campaign.
